Dear Sir -

I enclose proof with corrections ready for press - so that it may be in this next tuesday's number -

I don't know that my corrections are very clear - but I mean Bonsoir! to be dropped down a line into about the place I have indicated in red ink -

The sentence beginning "The immaculate character etc ... should read - "also the immaculate character etc ... "

Yours truly

J McNeill Whistler

1.  [26/30 December 1884]
JW's letter of 25 December, incorporating the alteration he requests, was published in The World, 31 December 1884, #11411. It was republished in Whistler, James McNeill, The Gentle Art of Making Enemies, London and New York, 1890, pp. 174-75, under the heading 'Noblesse oblige'; see Getscher, Robert H., and Paul G. Marks, James McNeill Whistler and John Singer Sargent. Two Annotated Bibliographies, New York and London, 1986, B. 28, p. 34.

2.  Edmund Yates
Edmund Hodgson Yates (1831-1894), novelist, 'Atlas' columnist and editor-proprietor of the World [more]. JW had sent a letter to Yates for publication and here suggests a minor alteration, which was made in the published version.
