Dear Mr Whistler
This tells its story and I hope you have the letter this speaks of. I take it for granted you sent him for H M the letter of which he spoke so neatly - & that H M has it. If by any misunderstanding you didn't do this it will serve now with modulation to [reacknowledge?] the Grecian epistle of thanks & make a pretty bouquet with it [p. 2] for the press.
Let me know speedily pray how you are! & let us consult about the aforesaid epistle before you respond.
Ever yours [afty?]
W H H
1. [14 December 1887]
This is written on the verso of #04539, and dates from after J. L. Pattison's letter to Hurlbert, 13 December 1887 (#04539). 'Wednesday' fell on 14 December 1887. Hurlbert's next letter was on 20 December (#02220).
4. H M
Presumably Rt Hon. Henry Matthews (1868-1874), QC, MP, Home Secretary [more], whom JW had consulted about an album to be presented to Queen Victoria containing the 'Naval Review set', 1887 (K. 316-331) (excat 7). See JW's letter to W. H. Smith (two versions, #01849, #01850).
