In the publication (see below) this letter is described as dating from 'Paris, 7. Jan., 1897', this possibly being information taken from a postmark.

The content of this letter indicates that it was written to either a gallery owner auctioneer or exhibiting society - it is not stated which one.
Published in an unknown sale catalogue: Glasgow University Library, Whistler PC21, p. 76 (cat. no. 1005) and described as having been signed, '2pp., oblong 8vo.', for sale at £6.6s.
