Dear Mr Thomson.
The pastel arrived and happily was opened at my studio by the man from your Paris house who brought it -
The glass was all broken to bits! - and I believe this was certainly the fault of the packing - However the drawing itself escaped though the frame was broken - But now I should like to know the history of the pastel itself? for [p. 2] in the first place I doubt if it were one of those exhibited with the Venice series at all - It seems to me more likely to have been one of the discarded ones that may have afterwards found its way out of the studio - how I don't know. In any case one thing is certain - it has been touched up by somebody else -
There is a certain passage in the sky of an abominable and crude colour not by me!
What to do I don't know - I will try and [...] you had better show the above - & mind that Mr Hamilton McClure sees it! - I fancy I have completely wiped up Mr Sheridan Ford here! What do you think? -
'76C' was written in another hand in red ink in the top left corner; '171' is in pencil at bottom right of p. 1.
Venice (M.824); the owner, Andrew Muir (ca 1837-1900?), Russia merchant and collector [more], wrote indignantly to Thomson on 14 June 1893 that the pastel had been in his possession, untouched, since he had bought it at Venice Pastels, The Fine Art Society, London, 1881 (#04197).
There appears to be a page (or pages) missing from the letter at this point.
'you ... [signature]' is written in the left margin of p. 1 at right angles to the main text. A page of the letter appears to be missing.
