Notes:

1.  [12/19 August 1895]
Dated from the reference to the Pall Mall Gazette (see below).

2.  Francis Gerard Prange
Probably written to Francis Gerard Prange (b. ca 1843), London art dealer [more].

3.  letters
Lawrence Alma-Tadema (1836-1912), painter [more], claimed in a lecture to art students at the South Kensington government art and design schools that the artist must know what he paints through a knowledge of such subjects as botany and geology, making a sly allusion to JW's use of yellow. It was published in the Times: 'Mr Alma Tadema on Art Training,' Times, 26 July 1895, p. 8. JW's response was also published: 'I have just read Mr. Tadema's convinced admission [...] In the full glow of his confession, moved by the monstrous desire to find others in like plight, he abruptly bethinks himself of me! - and throws my canary curtains upon the pile of his own many coloured offenses, as a warning to students who would escape the evil of meretricious bric a brac, and keep their workshop clean.' See Whistler, James McNeill, 'L'Influence du Jaune dans les Arts,' The Pall Mall Gazette, no. 9477, vol. 61, 9 August 1895, p. 2, and JW to the Editor, 7 August [1895], #10852.
