Many thanks & sincere for the exquisite signatures on the Album
Photographs. They are so dainty & charming that the collectors heart will leap for joy;
- they ought to sell without difficulty; & we are indeed highly pleased with the trouble you have taken.
[p. 2] Webb. To-day, early in the forenoon (as the Scots folk say) before the arrival of the signed copies, we sent an Album to Mr Webb at Austin Friars with a note "as instructed by Mr W. we send a special copy" etc etc & this we hope is all right.
Ribbons. We sent to our tobacconist (!) & got some cigar ribbons & the name of the makers & we have ordered enough to do the Albums.
Town Gardening. Messrs Virtue & Co send [p. 3] to-day, with their compliments a copy of Mrs Chamberlain's book.
Albums. Very well, say 4 to yourself counting Webbs as one.
We are closed here on Monday, but a note on any urgent matter to me at
Highgate N. W.
will find me at home. Some day perhaps Mrs Whistler & you will come & see our garden there of about half an acre - it sounds grand but it [is] nothing extraordinary. The house was built [p. 4] for a "Royal Academician" (!) Pickersgill, & I sometimes wonder if his spirit haunts it for I lie awake occasionally.
I hope to be in Paris on Thursday & until Saturday. Would it be a compliment to ask you & Mrs Whistler to dine on Thursday or Saturday at the Grand Hotel. It might be a change to see the vast vulgar herd at feeding time. Or would a smaller table be more acceptable? For once in a way it may please you & I should be highly honoured, & beg you to present the request to Mrs Whistler with my compliments.
Yours very truly
D. C. Thomson -
A selection of photographs of oil paintings, mostly those exhibited at Nocturnes, Marines and Chevalet Pieces, Boussod, Valadon & Cie, Goupil Gallery, London, 1892. JW had signed the deluxe sets with his name and butterfly signature, but requested that the album should be tied with yellow ribbon (see #08233).
