Forged picture -

Pall Mall - and Chronicle[2]

'1896[3]'

Notes:

1.  [1/8 August 1896]
Dated by the reference to a picture (see below), by a note in an unknown hand, and by the mourning border on the envelope, which dates from after the death of Beatrix Whistler (1857-1896), née Beatrice Philip, artist [more].

2.  Pall Mall - and Chronicle
Originally the envelope may have contained letters to, or press-cuttings from, the Pall Mall Gazette and Daily Chronicle. See JW's draft of a letter to the Daily Chronicle regarding a A Portrait of a Lady sold at Willis's Rooms, #00795. The sale by Robinson and Fisher took place on 30 July 1896, but an announcement that the picture was not by JW stopped the sale. See JW's letter to W. Webb, 28 July 1896, #06236, and a subsequent letter, #06237.

3.  1896
Written in another hand, in pencil.
