[ink drawing The Show on fire[4], inscribed:] HOW[5]

[p. 2] I present my compliments -

This document is protected by copyright.

1.  [5 February 1878?]
The subject is similar to #02892, which is dated 5 February 1878.

2.  Charles Augustus Howell
Charles Augustus ('Owl') Howell (1840? - d.1890), entrepreneur [more].

3.  ALS
The drawing is on pale grey laid paper with a greenish tone, the top edge torn, probably when it was removed by JW from the second of two albums of documents collected by Howell (see #02788).

4.  The Show on fire
The Show on fire (M.674). The subject is a burning hut on wheels, and probably refers to the volatile state of JW's affairs. The 'Show' is not necessarily an exhibition but the whole range of JW's artistic and financial affairs. A similar sketch (Howell and Whistler leaving the show on fire (M.673)) is #02892.

5.  HOW
The word 'HOW' is short for both 'Howell' and 'Show'. The rest of the word is obscured by smoke.

6.  [butterfly]
The butterfly is not exactly a signature but is flying out of the smoke at top right.
