[p. 2] Know all men by these presents

That I James A. Whistler of the City of Baltimore in the State of Maryland, being about to proceed to Europe, and being desirous to be represented in my absence, and for other considerations have made constituted and appointed, and by these presents do make constitute and appoint George W. Whistler of the City of Baltimore in the State of Maryland, my true and lawful Attorney with full power to manage and control all my affairs as though they were his own; to make sale of transfer and convey any property that may belong to me or to which I may become entitled; or where my own action is required by law to make agreements that shall bind me touching such property, to receive the dividends and interest due on all stocks bonds or other securities belonging to me – to change any investment or investments belonging [p. 3] to me, to collect all debts that may be owing to me by suit at law or in Equity, or to compromise the same, and generally to do whatever I might be able myself to do were I personally present and acting, and for the purposes of these presents one or more attornies under him to appoint, and their appointment or appointments to revoke at pleasure; and I hereby ratify and confirm whatever my said attorney may do on the premises

In testimony whereof I hereto set my hand and seal on this thirtieth day of July in the year Eighteen hundred and fifty five

Be it remembered that on this thirtieth day of July – in the year Eighteen hundred and fifty five before the subscriber a Justice [p. 4] of the Peace of the said State in and for the said City personally appeared James A. Whistler who I am satisfied of my own knowledge is the party named and described as and professing to be the party to the foregoing power of attorney and acknowledged the said power of attorney to be his act and deed.
