I am very sorry Mr Webb should have hesitated. Should he continue to refuse I see nothing for it unless you can obtain from my client the order to carry out the last elevation
E. W. Godwin
This letter is written on the same sheet of paper as #04294 (B. E. Nightingale to E. W. Godwin, 16 April 1878) and was copied that same day, presumably by one of B. E. Nightingale's clerks. The whereabouts of the original is unknown.
5. Mr Webb
George Webb (b. ca 1835), of G. and W. Webb. lawyer [more], and William Webb (b. ca 1851), of G. and W. Webb, lawyer [more], were empowered to pay Nightingale for his work at each stage, from the mortgage (see building agreement, 6 November 1877, #08927). At this stage they would not disburse money without the lease that still was not forthcoming from the Metropolitan Board of Works.
