Notes:
1. [August 1887/1888]
The list is dated 'August 1887' but the last etchings, on p. 5, were done on the Whistlers' honeymoon in 1888.
2. Ms/AD
The list was written in an unknown hand, with some corrections by JW. The titles are transcribed as given, including mistakes, such as 'Coustom House' and 'Chelsea Wharfe' (p. 1); 'The Abby Jubillee' and 'Fleur du Lis Passage' (p. 3); 'Rue au beure' (p. 4); and 'The Maireé' and 'Rochefoucaulét' (p. 5). Nearly all the names were crossed out, possibly as they were checked. Many have an additional dot to left and/or tick on the right. This is the most exhaustive list of JW's own etchings. It is not in the order of any of the published catalogues, and seems to have been an entirely private record of his oeuvre. The etchings were listed in two columns on pages in a ledger, and the following annotation, as far as possible, lists them in the order as given in the manuscript. The group of etchings appear to be related in size, until the last ones, of 1888, and so the list may relate to the storage of copperplates rather than etchings. The original list frequently gives the sizes separated by / rather than x, but in the interests of clarity this had been transcribed consistently as x. The notes below identify the etchings in the order in which they appear on the page, including those unidentified or possible identifications.
