Dear Mrs Jay -
You are always most kind and charming! and I am coming to beg you to think better of me, if possible, than mere outward and visible conduct of mine could perhaps suggest -
Alas! ... I cannot go out to dejeuner! If I am not in bed at that hour, with a cold, or hiding from the influenza, as I was the other day, I am hard at work in the studio -
But I shall appear some afternoon, now that I know you have come back - and ask you for a cup of tea - that I may have a talk with yourself and your husband - whom I was so sorry not to have seen -
With best wishes for the New Year dear Mrs Jay
Believe me Always sincerely
J McNeill Whistler
