'Xmas 1896.'
My dear Major -
I am going to Bournemouth - for a few days - Ridiculous of course - -
Thank your Mama[4] from this son in-law - with his warmest wishes!
From what you say I suppose [p. 2] you never got my letter in which I told you of the trelis [sic] for Trixie[5] - That is what I meant - & no "rebuke"!
A happy New Year to both of you -
Constant[6] turns up before you get this -
You are to get yourself something pretty with the enclosed which has nothing to do with the house - This with much affection
from the General.
See that Constant always appears at dinner in his proper habit now - and also tell him about the damp walls of studio that he may be present if workmen turn up -

Dated by the recipient 'Xmas 1896' on the letter, and '1896' on the envelope. There is no stamp or postmark. JW spent Christmas at Bournemout with Joseph Pennell (1860-1926) and his wife Elizabeth Robins Pennell (1855-1936), née Robins, JW's biographers.
