Dear Aitchison -

Strangely enough as yet no special notice of Godwin's[3] death has appeared in the papers -

Surely you are the one who might render justice to his genius - and I doubt not will be eager to write our regret for his loss. -

How pleased we all were to hear of the tribute you paid to him, only the other day, in your Speech -

I may tell you that the poor fellow was greatly touched by this generous acknowledgement [p. 2] of his high authority in the profession, from his distinguished confrère. -

It gave him one of his last happy moments as an artist - for he told this to me himself - the very night before he died! -

Always sincerely

J McNeill Whistler
