Dear Whistler

I laid your letter before my Directors today and they regret that not having received any of the money, save what they handed to you, that they cannot pay you a larger sum - Directly [p. 2] the Exhibition[2] of the Pastels closes they will get in the money as quickly as possible & hand it over to you -

I therefore return you the check for £149. 12. 6

The Art Journal people cannot spare a man - under these [p. 3] circumstances would it not be as well to get Goulding[3] for a couple of days as Mr Brown[4] says that there are only some score or so of etchings[5] that require printing -

The Directors were asking what had been recouped of the £700 for these plates [p. 4] & I was obliged to say - nothing! as yet -

Yours fai[thfu]lly

Marcus B Huish
