This is one of two copies that were enclosed with a letter from Algernon Graves to JW on 16 October (#01816). The other is from George Roland Halkett (1855-1918), artist, critic and political cartoonist (#13340).

Graves wrote to JW on 14 October 1884 (#01815) that he had written to Edinburgh on JW's instructions of 13 October 1884 (#10919) raising the price of the painting from 400 to 1000 guineas.
4. Carlyle
Arrangement in Grey and Black, No. 2: Portrait of Thomas Carlyle (YMSM 137). JW later sold the painting to Glasgow Corporation in April 1891 for 1000 guineas.
