Mon cher Duret –

Translation:

My dear Duret –

I owe you all kinds of excuses! but you will understand the position when I tell you that I spent the day at the Police Station! The business about Constant's good friend resulted in the discovery of a theft! – All this is too long to write to you – I will tell you about it – and I will come and see you before my departure –

With many regrets

Yours,

J McN Whistler

Hotel Chatham –

Notes:

1.  [1/10 January 1897]
Although the date '1900-1' is added at the top of p. 1 in another hand, this must date before other letters regarding Constant between 13-16 January 1897 (#04696, #04697, #04698, #04699). Dated also from the address; JW frequently stayed at the Hotel Chatham from the late 1890s onwards.

2.  Théodore Duret
Théodore Duret (1838-1927), art critic and collector [more].

3.  ALS
The paper has a mourning border.

4.  la bonne amie
Louise, JW's servant at 110 rue du Bac [more]. It appears that some items were missing from JW's house at 110 rue du Bac, or his studio. Her guilt is discussed in a letter to R. B. Philip, [14 January 1897], #04697.

5.  Constant
T. C. J. Constant, JW's servant and valet [more]. Constant was later dismissed and threatened to sue JW (see #04696, #04697, #04698, #04699).
