110, RUE DU BAC,
My dear Mr Shannon,
Many thanks for your very pleasant and courteous letter.
In its values it is affected by the colour in the picture - notably, for instance, the hair of the girl on the sofa is red - or copper coloured - and full of light - and the face is very fair - though golden. In the photograph all this is dark - if not black.
However, I doubt if it be wise to tinker at the reproduction - unless you could do so yourself. - What am I saying! - I mean of course unless you were good enough yourself to retouch the proof from the picture.
Always sincerely yours,
J. McN. Whistler

This letter may relate to another possible reproduction.
