My dear Alan -
I would have such a lot to talk to you about since we last were together that I had better know how far you have got! -
Meanwhile I wish you would tell me who is the one, who, in the matter of buying for the Museum marbles, bronzes etc, would be the one really to act? - What I mean is, [p. 2] is Armstrong the one who looks at the works, judges, approves, and orders the purchase - or is Middleton the better man to apply to in case one has anything to sell - I promised to ask this question of you privately for some people here, who [are] anxious to get the Museum to buy some of Clesingers works -
I dont know the statues myself - but I believe that some steps are being taken towards the authorities of the Museum -
You might write a line and tell me who is the best to approach - etc etc
How are you? - Why do you never come over here? -
With kindest things to your wife & yourself -
J McN Whistler
Dated from the address and the reference to Middleton, who died unexpectedly in 1896.
