Notes:

1.  20 February 1879
Date received.

2.  James Anderson Rose
James Anderson Rose (1819-1890), solicitor [more].

3.  ALS
'recd ... 1879' is written in another hand, at the top, and 'Whistler ... 1879' in the same hand, at right angles, in the left margin. '36' is written in yet another hand, in a circle, at top right. The legal documents kept by Rose on each case were numbered in this manner.

4.  Low
Robert Low (b. ca 1837), of Robert and J. E. Low, house agents and surveyors [more]. Their action against JW was scheduled for trial on 5 March 1879 (see C. R. Cuff to JW, 20 February 1879, #12036).

5.  Ashe
Major Walter Ashe (b. ca 1842), army officer and writer [more].

6.  Huish
Marcus Bourne Huish (1843 - d.1921), barrister, writer and art dealer, Director of the Fine Art Society [more]. Written in pencil after signature. It is not clear what JW's problem with Huish was, unless it concerned the Fine Art Society's subscription to pay Ruskin's costs (see their subcription form, December 1878, #03596; and letter from Smalley to JW, 10 January 1879, #05462).

7.  'Huish'
Written at bottom right in a different hand.
