This note relates to the annual council elections of the RBA which took place on 4 June 1888. JW had been President of the RBA since June 1886 but his autocratic style and instigation of radical changes to the Society's exhibition policy meant that the last months of his Presidency were stormy. When a proposal was circulated by eight R. B. A. members in order to force him to resign, he made a vigorous effort to gather enough votes to defeat the motion (see #05321, and Dorment, Richard, and Margaret F. MacDonald, James McNeill Whistler, exhibition catalogue, National Gallery of Art, Washington, 1995, pp. 49-55).
