My dear Sir

I hasten to correct an error which I made in the letter[2] I sent to you a few days since in reference to the name inscribed on the old monument[3] at Magherafelt, which is, Ralph Whistler[4], and not, Gabriel, as I thought

I send the enclosed[5] from the Revd Mr Irwin[6] [p. 2] the then Rector of the Parish written in 1856

Hoping you have 'ere this received my letter in answer to yours[7]

I remain
very truly yours

Thomas L Whistler

J. McN. Whistler Esq.

[p. 3] 'Letter from[8] Mr Whistler of Bray,'

Notes:

1.  Thomas Lowe Whistler
Thomas Lowe Whistler, Jr (fl. 1840-1868), surgeon [more]. JW was not related to this namesake family.

2.  letter
See T. L. Whistler to JW, #06975.

3.  monument
The monument was in Magherafelt Parish Church. It bore a gilded armorial shield and was dated A. D. 1657. (see C. K. Irwin to [T. L. Whistler], #02371). See also Charles King Irwin (1837-1915), clergyman [more] to George William Whistler (1822-1869), engineer, JW's half-brother [more], #02372.

4.  Ralph Whistler
Ralph (Randolphus or H. S. E. Radulphus?) Whistler (d. 1656 or 1657) [more].

5.  enclosed
Probably C. K. Irwin to Thomas Lowe Whistler, Jr (fl. 1840-1868), surgeon [more], #02371.

6.  Revd Mr Irwin
Charles King Irwin (1837-1915), clergyman [more].

7.  yours
Untraced. JW seems to have obtained the name of T. L. Whistler through Thomas Armstrong (1832-1911), artist and Director of Art, South Kensington Museum [more] (see T. Armstrong to JW, #00196).

8.  Letter from ... Bray,
Written in another hand. This may be of Joseph Whistler Revillon (1886-1955), JW's great-nephew [more], who bequeathed another letter (C. K. Irwin to [T. L. Whistler], #02372) on this subject to Glasgow University Library).
