Why have you sent me your paper?
Do you want me to read it? Alas, I never read papers - except those I write for - and only my own writings in them.
Do you want me to write for it? I should joy [sic] to collaborate with the Butterfly, but alas again, my prejudices are too eccentric, my style too individualist, for your gentlemanly little brochure. Would you like to have the blood of forty critics on your editorial souls? Could you tolerate a man who trampled on every name revered in contemporary literature from Queen Victoria & Rider Haggard down to Tennyson & Ruskin? Not so.
You would want to edit me - & then I should kill you.
Written in an unknown hand. The instructions were not followed when the letter was forwarded to JW.
