This was probably an early proof of an engraving by Richard Josey (1840-1906), reproductive engraver [more], of Arrangement in Grey and Black, No. 2: Portrait of Thomas Carlyle (YMSM 137). This was offered by JW in an earlier letter, JW to Princess Louise, #03589.
Sir John George Edward Henry Douglas Sutherland Campbell (1845-1914), Marquess of Lorne, husband of Princess Louise [more], who was about to take up the post of Governor-General of Canada (1878-83).
