My dear Sir.

I ask a great favor of you: Will you design for me a book plate[2]. I am fond of books - a collector of your etchings and lithographs and would like very much to please myself and honor my books by placing in them a plate designed & etched - or lithographed by the greatest art master [p. 2] of this (or any other age)

I hope you will excuse the boldness of this request, and when you favor it, kindly let the plate be not greater than the one third of this page

I would like to add that the giving to me of this pleasure will also please our mutual friend Mr. Kennedy[3] of Wunderlich & Co

If the Whistler butterfly [p. 3] were on the plate then indeed I would have a "dainty dish to lay before the King", again asking pardon for troubling you

I am Yours faithfully

John Caldwell
