My dear Mr. Whistler

I am very much obliged to you for your letter of todays date[2], and I deeply regret my inability to comply with your wishes at the beginning. However the reply is quite sufficiently circulated, and G. M[3] is more or less squashed -

You will believe me when I say that only my sense of [p. 2] responsibility - which of course may have been mistaken - prevented my publishing the letter of your seconds[4] - but after I had written to you I took counsels opinion, and I was directly advised that to hold G M "up to ridicule for contempt" for refusing to fight a duel, would in England enable him to bring a libel suit on that issue alone, and that we shall [p. 3] be debarred from raising the question of the incidents which led to the publication - If G M were so advised too, he would have gone for us like a shot -

Believe me
Yours vy sincerely

E B. Iwan-Müller
