4, WHITEHALL COURT,
S. W.

Dear Mr Browne [sic] -

Just a line to say that those two particular little pictures are gone - I mean the girl on the sofa - and the little shop[3] with the old woman & child in the door way -

I am off to the sea side for a few days - and perhaps may bring back something, & will let you have a peep!

Very Sincerely

J McN. Whistler

Notes:

1.  [September/December 1896?]
Dated from the address - JW stayed with William Heinemann (1863-1920), publisher [more], for some months after the death (on 10 May) of Beatrix Whistler (1857-1896), née Beatrice Philip, artist [more] (the letter is written at right angles to the printed address). JW's reference to the 'sea side' may indicate his trip (in mid- to late September) to northern France.

2.  Ernest George Brown
Ernest George Brown (1853 or 1854-1915), assistant manager at the Fine Art Society [more].

3.  little shop
The Little White Sofa (YMSM 258) and The Shop Window (YMSM 377), were sold by JW to Alexander Arnold Hannay (b. ca 1858), solicitor and collector [more].
