De My dear Sir -

When there came, to me, your most charming & gracious invitation[3] to stay with you, as your guest in the College, I was so weakened by relapse, that I gladly accepted the proposal of my neighbour, Mr Walton[4], to send [p. 2] himself through Mr Newberry[5], my gratified sense of this further courtesy - and my sorrow at not being able to accept it -

Clearly it is time that, without longer hoping, I should say definitely, that it is impossible for me to entertain the journey - and so I may not as yet, to my deep disappointment, have the pleasure of personally meeting you -

Believe me
Dear Sir
Very faithfully

J. McNeill Whistler
