This is the index to a ledger, with entries written in many different hands. The earliest transactions recorded relate to 1877 (see #12987, 12988), and the index and ledger were used intermittently right up to Whistler's death in 1903.

J. Craibe Angus, art dealer, of Craibe Angus and Son, Glasgow [more]. Possibly written by Charles James Whistler Hanson (1870-1935), engineer, son of JW and Louisa Fanny Hanson [more]. See #13045.

G. Carmentron, art dealer at 43 rue Lafitte, Paris. Possibly written in another hand.
Messrs Dowdeswell and Dowdeswell, art dealers and print publishers. Written in another hand, possibly by Charles James Whistler Hanson (1870-1935), engineer, son of JW and Louisa Fanny Hanson [more]. See accounts at #13020-32, #13035, #13047-56, and #13092.

JW probably arrived in Venice on 20 September 1879, and was not back in London until November 1880.
28. First Series
The first set of twelve etchings, Mr Whistler's Etchings of Venice, 1880 (the first 'Venice Set') (K. 183-189, 191-195). (excat 5), was published by the Fine Art Society in 1880. By 1882 when this list was made, JW had not finished printing the set, and indeed, he never completed some etchings. He was, however, opening negotiations for the exhibition and sale of the second set, with the result that Mr Whistler's Etchings, were shown at The Fine Art Society, London, in 1883.
29. Second Series
A Set of twenty-six etchings of Venice, 1886 (the second 'Venice set') (K.196-216, 233-237). (excat 6) was published by Messrs Dowdeswell and Dowdeswell in 1886. JW here lists 29 plates, which can be identified, respectively, as: The Dyer (K.219); Nocturne: Palaces (K.202), Garden (K.210), Upright Venice (K.205), Long Venice (K.212), La Salute: Dawn (K.215), Little Salute (K.220), The Bridge (K.204), The Balcony (K.207), San Biagio (K.197), San Giorgio (K.201), Long Lagoon (K.203), Fishing-Boat (K.208), Fish-Shop, Venice (K.218), Nocturne: Furnace (K.213), Wool-Carders (K.221), Fruit-Stall (K.200), The Riva, No.2 (K.206), The Rialto (K.211), Stables (K.225), Turkeys (K.199), Islands (K.222), Nocturne: Salute (K.226), Nocturne: Shipping (K.223), Old Women (K.224), either Doorway and Vine (K.196) or Bead-Stringers (K.198), Lagoon: Noon (K.216), Ponte del Piovan (K.209) and Quiet Canal (K.214). When the set was published four years later in 1886, JW left out The Dyer (K.219), Little Salute (K.220), Fish-Shop, Venice (K.218), Wool-Carders (K.221), Stables (K.225), Islands (K.222), Nocturne: Salute (K.226), Nocturne: Shipping (K.223), and Old Women (K.224). Most of these are drypoints and might not have sustained a large print-run. Instead, he added recent London etchings to make up the set.
