JW sent a similar subscription form and promised 'first proofs' of the engraving in a letter dated 26 July 1878 to Matthew Forster (1826-1881), barrister, of Frere, Forster and Frere, solicitors [more] (#11680). In fact the first proofs were delivered on 2 December 1878 (Pennell, Elizabeth Robins, and Joseph Pennell, The Life of James McNeill Whistler, 2 vols, London and Philadelphia, 1908, I, pp. 226-27).

Josey's engraving of Arrangement in Grey and Black, No. 2: Portrait of Thomas Carlyle (YMSM 137) was published in a limited edition by Henry Graves and Co. of Pall Mall. Howell acquired the copyright of the portrait for £80 and six proofs, and he also organised the subscriptions.
