'26. July. 1878.'
JW wrote a note at the top of a circular.
The proofs for the engraving of Arrangement in Grey and Black, No. 2: Portrait of Thomas Carlyle (YMSM 137). It was published in a limited edition by Henry Graves and Co. of Pall Mall and the first proofs were delivered on 2 December 1878 (Pennell, Elizabeth Robins, and Joseph Pennell, The Life of James McNeill Whistler, 2 vols, London and Philadelphia, 1908, I, pp. 226-27).
There is nothing on the reverse of the sheet, and no second page has survived. Most likely Forster followed JW's directions and filled in the second page of the sheet (a subscription form) and posted it off.
7. '26. July. 1878.'
Written in the hand of Charles A. Howell in lower left-hand corner of sheet. Howell acquired the copyright of the portrait for £80 and six proofs. He also organised the subscription list. Other copies of this circular are #02785, #11899 (see also #02411).
