Dear Whistler

Our accountant reports as follows as regards the sales[3] - The number should have been 1984. 45 country orders having been omitted - Since then check was drawn out 16 more have been sold making £2000 or £100.

On account of this you have had £91. 14. 0

As I knew nothing about any arrangement having been made for the man - for until I left the whole thing [p. 2] was treated as a joke I wrote to the Director Cope[4] who was in charge in my absence & he replies as follows.

"I always understood that Whistler was to pay for the wages & livery & I am quite surprised to hear of his claim[5]. I certainly never agreed to our paying for the man - it was entirely his own arrangement & I understood from Mugford[6] was to be at his [p. 3] own expense"

Here's a proposition - if we pay for the man who sold your catalogues will you pay for the man who took our shillings - He gets 30/- a week -

You forget that you are actually making us pay for all the catalogues we gave away.

In his letter, JW claimed that the Fine Art Society had agreed to pay for a door attendant who was dressed in yellow and white livery in order to blend in with JW's yellow and white decorative scheme for the gallery. By way of justification, he claimed that the attendant was 'one of the elements of the Exhibition - like the hangings and various arrangements in Canary' (see JW to M. B. Huish, #01158).
