Your note mon tres cher has followed me here - whither I had flown to escape your vigilant eye! -

It is a wonderful place, though I fancy I have had enough of it - and long for London -

When I get back you will have to come & see what I have been about - and soon after you shall carry off the portrait[3] - ! Voila! -

Did you see in the The World[4] Jan. 2. my letter, referring to a paragraph in the number of the week before (Dec. 26)? [p. 2] About 'Arry of course -

Look in this week's World too, I think you will find another go - if in time -

4.  The World
The subject was an article by Henry ('Arry') Quilter (1851-1907), advocate and art critic [more], in which he mistook a drawing for an etching, in a review of Samuel Palmer's (Samuel Palmer (1805-1881), painter, draughtsman and etcher [more]) illustrations for Virgil's Eclogues (see World, 26 December 1883 and 2 January 1884, Getscher, Robert H., and Paul G. Marks, James McNeill Whistler and John Singer Sargent. Two Annotated Bibliographies, New York and London, 1986, B.24; #11398). There are similar references to these newspapers in #09420, #03607, #10690, #10979.
