Herbert Vivian was a journalist, author and Jacobite enthusiast. He married Olivia Walton.

Life:

Vivian was founder and editor of the journal the Whirlwind: A Lively and Eccentric Newspaper, in which JW was also interested. The Winged Hat (C.34) was the first of three lithographs to be published in the Whirlwind on 25 October 1890, under the title 'Mr Whistler's "Songs on Stone".' It was followed by The Tyresmith (C.36) and Maunder's Fish Shop, Chelsea (C.37) in November and December.

The Whirlwind was a short-lived venture but Vivian continued his journalistic career, becoming special correspondent of the Morning Post from 1898-1899 and the Daily Express from 1899-1900. He also published works on Serbia, Abyssinia, Tunisia and on the Secret Service. A keen Jacobite sympathiser, he later became editor of the Royalist International Herald.
