Count Giuseppe Tornielli-Brusati di Vergano was an Italian senator and an experienced and influential career diplomat.
In 1879 Italy officially recognised Romanian independence and the beginning of bilateral diplomatic relations under the level of legation. Count Giuseppe Tornielli-Brusati was accredited in Bucharest, under the quality of Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Minister.
Later he was appointed Italian ambassador to London, and, in the 1890s, to Paris. It was in his official capacity that he was in touch with Whistler, concerning honours awarded to the artist by the King of Italy in 1901 (see JW's letters of thanks, #02376 and #02377).
