William Joseph Hardee was a commander in the army of the Confederate States of America.
He graduated from West Point in 1838, later serving under Generals Taylor and Scott in the Mexican War in 1847. He returned to West Point in 1856 to become commandant of cadets. During the American civil war he served as a colonel and rose to the rank of major-general as a result of his leadership on the battlefield at Shiloh.
