Miss Evans has not been identified and it is not known if she was British or American.

It is apparent that she was acquainted with Mary Bacon Ford and Sheridan Ford at the time when Ford was attempting to publish his version of The Gentle Art of Making Enemies in 1890 and thereafter, which JW was determined to prevent by any legal means. JW apparently felt that he had obtained information useful to his cause from her, regarding some form of 'blackmail' used by Ford, in some other affair. It is not entirely clear whether JW counted her among the Ford's active supporters, or merely as an unwitting accessory, although at one point JW did describe her as 'that terrible Miss Evans' (#10780).
