André-Henri Dargelas was a genre painter.
Dargelas trained under François Edouard Picot at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, and exhibited at the Salon from 1857 onwards.
In a letter of July 1863 to Whistler, Henri Fantin-Latour spoke condescendingly of the students of Picot, exhibiting at the Salon of 1863, as conforming to academic principles rather displaying innovation (#01078). Dargelas exhibited three works at this particular Salon exhibition (cat. nos. 502-4).
