Dear Susie -
I really must send you Mrs Merriman's letter - isn't it Amazing! -
For impudent naiveté I never knew anything like the Merriman! - Send the letter back - I think I should like to keep it for a while -
Did you ever know anything like the superb weather - though I suppose in [p. 2] Manchester it rains - and is as black as usual -
You will be pleased to hear that the Münich People have done their best and awarded me a First Class Gold Medal! -
You remember the letter on the other occasion?! - However they have made all sorts of amendes since - and this is the fifth or sixth honour from Bavaria! -
I saw it reprinted in a Liverpool Paper - with shy instead of sky! which they doubtless took for a printer's error! - wonderful people -
I send you a copy from the N. Y. Herald -
Always with kindest regards
1. [14/21 August 1892]
Dated from the reference to a published letter (see below).
4. Mrs Merriman's
Mrs Merriman, a friend of S. Livermore. The letter is unlocated.
5. Gold Medal
At the 6th Internationale Kunst-Austellung, Munich, 1892.
Beck had asked JW if he was prepared to contribute to the World's Columbian Exposition, Department of Fine Arts, Chicago, 1893, in which case he would receive an official request from Frederic Leighton (1830-1896), painter and sculptor [more].
7. National Observer
JW to J. W. Beck, published in Whistler, James McNeill, [Letter to J. W. Beck], The National Observer: A Record and Review, no. 195, (new series), vol. 8, 13 August 1892, p. 326, p. 326, see #02705.
8. Liverpool paper
The Liverpool newspaper is unidentified. The Pennells point out that the original word was 'shy' but that JW was delighted with the misprint (Pennell, Elizabeth Robins, and Joseph Pennell, The Life of James McNeill Whistler, 2 vols, London and Philadelphia, 1908, vol. 2., p. 131).
9. N. Y. Herald
New York Herald, reference not located.
