My dear Sir -

I beg to acknowledge your very kind personally kind letter[3] of yesterday - & I trust that you will convey to the Senate my high keen sense of their high courtesy rare indulgence in yeilding [sic] to they are extending to the exis peculiar circumstances, & so graciously conferring this high degree honour in my [illegible] enforced absence -

Pray present my thanks, and again accept them yourself together with my regrets to the distinguished body from whom [to?] receive who have unanimously chosen my me as their confrère - than which there can be no greater compliment -

I would like to have said to these Gentlemen as a reassuringance element to in their gener[o]sity that in one way at least the Gods have prepared me for the reception of such dignity, in as much as they have kept for me the purest possible strain of Scotch blood - for am I not [illegible] a McNeill! & a McNeill of Bara[4] -
