Enclosed I send forty pounds £40. - for Messrs Webb as I told Mr Weston I should - Do try and see them for me or write and beg that they will never run up expenses as I always will do my best to pay them - and only [p. 2] require their indulgence just now because of my having been so hard hit -

'43' written in another hand, in a circle in left margin at right angles to main text. Legal documents, including those relating to JW's bankruptcy, were collected and numbered by James Anderson Rose (1819-1890), solicitor [more]. JW was declared 'insolvent' on 6 May 1879.
5. Messrs Webb
George Webb (b. ca 1835), of G. and W. Webb. lawyer [more] and William Webb (b. ca 1851), of G. and W. Webb, lawyer [more], lawyers representing the North Metropolitan Permanent Building and Investment Society, who held JW's mortgage for the White House in Tite Street. On 13 April they agreed to a month's delay (see Webb to Rose, #11908).
