Dear Whistler

Your letter reached me this morning, together with one from Mr. Bancroft[2] dated 8th inst. He did not telegraph to me yesterday - I have replied[3] to him: "Your letter dated 8th inst. reached me today. As I had not closed sale of pictures referred to I have accepted a better offer, & have therefore written[4] to Messrs McCracken[5]" (his agents here) "to [p. 2] return you your cheque". I hope Bancroft will raise no objection to this; if he does, will you kindly let me know at once, at latest on Monday next, 13th inst: Should I not hear from you on or before that day I shall conclude that I am free to close with Mr. Kennedy[6] on Tuesday -

With many thanks -
very truly yours

John Cavafy
