Dear Mr. Whistler;
Since my return from Chicago I have seen Mr. Mead, of the firm of Dodd, Mead & Co. who are to publish the book I am writing on "Original Etching", which I hope to have ready for the printer by the first of August. I had not seen him since the autumn, when I reported to him what you had said about making an etching for the book. You will recall that you kindly consented to make an etching, but on the [p. 2] day I last saw you in Paris had not made up your mind as to the terms which would be satisfactory to you, which I then said would have to be arranged between you and the publishers.
Mr. Mead tells me that he has heard nothing from you, and I infer that you finally decided that you could not with satisfaction to yourself make an etching which, after a few proofs, would have to be steeled [p. 3] for the printing of an indefinite number of impressions.
It would be a pleasure to have my book go out with an etching from your hand, but if that cannot be, it will be published without any etching or other illustration. It remains, however, a gratification to me that you were once willing to undertake the
makingetching of a plate for me.
And I feel now, [p. 4] as I said to you then, that I would rather not have the etching than to have one which, from conditions of printing or otherwise, should not be fairly representative of your best work and satisfactory to you.
I hope the book will turn out well, but often wish it were not on my hands.
May 15, 1893,
To Mr. J. McNeill Whistler
