Dear Mr. Whistler,
Thank you very much for your generous message. It was rich reward for any little effort of mine!
To-day by appointment I saw the Principal, who only returned last night. He [p. 2] was most kind & gave his word that the degree wd: be conferred on Tuesday - in absentia -
I said if anything cd. increase yr: appreciation (& ours) of the honour done to Art it wd: be this handsome gift of it to one who was absent. [p. 3] I asked permission to let you know. It was at once given & the Principal said - 'but I must myself write to tell Mr Whistler.'
As for me if I can leave Edinburgh in time (I go there on Monday) I mean to be at the ceremony to wave my [p. 4] cap for the new Doctor of Laws!
With greetings to Miss Philip,
Ever Yours Sincerely
I write in haste that you may get this tomorrow. Please do not trouble to reply -
