April 8. / 1903
Dear Mr. Whistler,
Miss Story called today & told me that her father had received a kind letter from you informing him that it wd: not be possible for you to come for the Graduation Ceremony at the end of this month, & that in reply he has written to [p. 2] ask if you could come in July.
She was afraid you might be put to trouble by having to write again so I suggested that I might telegraph you so that by replying through me you might be saved this -
If you think there is not much prospect of [p. 3] your being able to come in July I venture to suggest that it would be better for you to be capped in absentia - as otherwise the matter wd. be indefinitely postponed - The Principal Graduation day is the one in April.
Should this be your own view I need not say that I shall be [p. 4] most happy (as will Newbery I am sure) to do anything to bring about this arrangement. It is exceptional, but can be done.
For a fortnight I'm here on the sick list again - the second chill this winter!
I hope you are well - & that you will be able to take advantage of the changed weather that must surely come.
With kind regards to Miss Philip
2. Miss Story
