Dear Sir -

I greatly appreciate and value the notable and most flattering compliment suggested paid me by your personal letter[4] of immediate congratulation to me, on the bestowal of the high distinction honour upon myself by the University of Glasgow -

I trust indeed that I may [p. 2] be present at allowed to go to Glasgow but I be present at the august moment, Ceremonial but don't not at all know - for I am deeply in the hands of other Doctors! - who may at any moment order me off to what they fancy is the South -

I beg that you will accept my warmest thanks for your most courteous distinguished sympathy, and it's [sic] graceful expression -

and I am
Dear Sir -
Very faithfully

[J McNeill Whistler][5]
