THE UNIVERSITY
GLASGOW

17 March 1903

My dear Sir

It was with great pleasure I received your assurance[2] that you accepted and appreciated the honorary degree which this University had offered you - the highest mark of regard & distinction which we [p. 2] can bestow - At the same time I was grieved to learn that the state of your health seemed to threaten the possibility of your being unable to venture on the journey to Glasgow. I trust that this cause of uncertainty no longer exists, & [p. 3] that we may count on your ability to appear here in person not later than the 20th April. I hope that you will then do me the honour of being my guest during your stay in this City - My house is in The College so that your being here [p. 4] would reduce to a minimum any fatigue or inconvenience that attend the graduation.

I shall expect a favourable reply to this proposal -

Believe me
my dear Sir
very faithfully yrs
