My dear Fisher,
People - some at least, & especially Mr Whistler - think we did something very strange & almost insulting in offering in our first letter to him to return him his subscriptn [p. 2] Unless I have made a great mistake, I think you will find it to be the usual course taken in all good clubs: at for example; the Carlton, the Conservative, Oxford & Camb[ridge]. - the [p. 3] Junior Univ[ersit]y, & the Union return to an expelled member the subscription for the current year: - the East Indian United, half the Subscription.
1. [13/20 June 1867]
This dates from after 11 June 1867 when R. N. Wornum, secretary of the Burlington Fine Arts Club, first wrote demanding JW's resignation, after his quarrel with Francis Seymour Haden (1818-1910), surgeon and etcher, JW's brother-in-law [more] (#11954). If the reading of 'Thursday' (at top of letter) is correct, then this might be the 13 or 20 June 1867.
