Mon cher Haden.

My dear Haden.

One morning I found poor Legros[6] quite bruised and he told me that he had been horribly maltreated by Mr Whistler. Nothing could have been more moving than the appearance [p. 2] and history of this poor boy. The scene happened in the city at the house of a Mr Ionidès[7] who could, I believe, give you the all details.

Yours

Notes:

1.  19 June [1867]
Dated from the context of the Burlington Club enquiry into JW's alleged violent conduct towards various people, which took place in 1867. For a summary, see #12972.

2.  Henri-François Guéneau de Mussy
Henri-François Guéneau de Mussy (1814-1892), doctor [more].

3.  Francis Seymour Haden
Francis Seymour Haden (1818-1910), surgeon and etcher, JW's brother-in-law [more]. He was a patron of Legros.

4.  Legros
Alphonse Legros (1837-1911), painter, etcher and art teacher [more]. Originally one of the 'Société des trois', Legros had gradually become estranged from his two friends, JW and Fantin-Latour. He owed JW money, but the immediate quarrel probably arose over Joanna Hiffernan (b. ca 1843), JW's model and mistress [more].

5.  Mr Ionidès
Alexander ('Aleco') Ionides (1840-1898), businessman [more].
