Up to this moment no one has come to do anything towards restoring the gallery, and as far as I have been able to ascertain no one has received any instructions from you on the subject - You [p. 2] must please clearly understand, as I informed you in my letter of Saturday last, that I must hold you responsible for the rent from that date and must continue to do so until the gallery be restored to the condition in which you found it.
I am Dear Sir
E. Clifton Griffith
J. A. M. Whistler Esq.
[p. 3] P. S. From enquiries I have made I believe that the re-colouring and decorating may be done for about £30 - If you like to send me a cheque for that sum I will take all further trouble in that respect off your hands.
1. Edward Clifton Griffiths
Capt. Edward Clifton Griffith, gallery landlord [more]. See also other correspondence between JW and Griffiths between 20 and 30 January 1875 concerning the condition of his gallery (#11445, #12165, #11442, #01603, #11441, #12148, #12145, #11444).
Written in another hand, upper left corner of p. 1.
The gallery was the site of Mr Whistler's Exhibition, Flemish Gallery, Pall Mall, London, 1874. JW decorated it in primrose, pink-grey and brown distemper. Griffiths required that the gallery should be returned to its original state and hung with maroon cloth. See statement of proof, #12138.
The rent was £315 per annum, payable in four instalments.
